Yes we are fine thank-you. It is a tragic thing and on everyone's minds but we are safe. White Island is about 90Km away so not exactly in the neighbourhood but we can see the plume of smoke. I haven't noticed any tremors though. The huge cruise ship which was docked in our port, Tauranga, stayed for an extra day or two since a number of their passengers were on the island. Such a tragedy - our thoughts are with all the families.
It is one of those strange things - it has the reputation of "New Zealand's most active volcano" and yet you somehow get seduced into thinking that it is fairly safe and under control. I guess we never have these things under control. It has certainly tempered my thoughts about going there for a visit. I might be happy with just seeing it from the shoreline or a helicopter fly-by.

I hope a very very wide fly-by. Even a chopper is not safe when the eruption produces a pyroclastique cloud, if it is too close...
Our prayers are with the less fortunate.
