At MQTC v2.0.1.4, several people mentioned that initially, they thought "Capitalware's MQ Technical Conference" was ONLY a conference on Capitalware's products. I was surprised by these comments and made me wonder how many people 'out there' also think MQTC is only on Capitalware's products.
So, I'm thinking of changing the conference name to:
- MQ Technical Conference presented by Capitalware
- MQ Technical Conference hosted by Capitalware
- MQ Technical Conference managed by Capitalware
- MQ Technical Conference brought to you by Capitalware
If the name "Capitalware's MQ Technical Conference" might cause confusion then I'm open to suggestions. What do people think?

Roger Lacroix

It never occured to me to think of it that way, but now that you mention it, you, I guess it can give people the wrong impression.
"MQ Technical Conference presented by Capitalware" would be my choice of what you show above.
But even then some people are still going see a vendor in the title, anywhere in the title and assume its all about that vendor. Ten years from now when this thing is really big you'll get the big sponsers and it will be the
Pepsi Co. / Frito-Lay MQ Technical Conference
..what will they assume then!? _________________ Peter Potkay

I don't like this one. The conference is presented by lots of different speakers not just Capitalware - if people were confused by the previous one, they could also be confused by this one.

Don't like this one - can't put my finger on why.

You could do "MQ Technical Conference brought to you in part by Capitalware". It highlights Capitalware, but also recognizes that other groups are involved. |

Or, you could make this a contest to name the conference, with prizes such as t-shirts, coffee mugs, free ticket to the next one... _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

You could also use the same form of words to make it clearer in the vendor sessions which vendor is involved - " xxxxx brought to you by .... ".
Not applicable to the general sessions of course. However:
"Rolled up newspaper sponsored in part by IBM" might be applicable for some sessions....
...oh happy memory......

If you mean "me, myself & I" then that is true. If you are thinking that there are other people or companies involved in organizing or managing MQTC, nope, it is just me. I take care of everything: booking conference rooms, booking speaker's hotel rooms, ordering breakfast, lunch & desserts, doing the vendor area layout, making sure certain vendors are not next to each other, planning the 2 vendor evenings, handling speaker cancellations, creating the web site, creating the schedule, creating the conference directory, ordering shirts, ordering lanyards, printing the name tags, etc...
I'm not bragging. I do it because I have a vision on how conferences should be done. 99% of the conferences I go to are crazy with people rushing from room to room with average food (if you are lucky).
How can people absorb the material in the presentations if the attendee's brain is not in a relaxed state?
My goal for MQTC is to educate people first, provide a relaxing atmosphere for the conference second, provide really good food third and hopefully break-even on the costs.

Roger Lacroix

Hi Roger,
Just to be clear, the addition "in part by" was in no way to downplay the amount of effort or work you put into the MQTC Conference. Without you, this conference would have never happened and it was clear from just being at the conference how much work you put into it. I truly do appreciate that amount of work, and allowing this conference to exist.
When you first mentioned the options, the phrase "brought to you by" took my mind to the endless hours of TV programming I have watched to the phrase "brought to you in part by x". For example, "The Price is Right was brought to you in part by Toyota". That made me think about how the TV advertising people do it, and how they use that little wordsmithing of "in part by" to highlight a companies involvement, but also leave some room for other contributors to be acknowledged. I thought it was a nice way of wording it, so wanted to mention it.
Thanks,
Tim |

I rather like one of the alternatives that appeared on ListServe, "...inspired by...", which very accurately describes Roger's efforts. _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

Well, no. Because he did the bulk of the work, and only inspired the speakers. He didn't inspire anyone to do the bulk of the work - except his kids and that's not really the same thing...
Brought to you by seems to be a good favorite - although I tend to agree with Peter that people are going to misunderstand no matter what it says.
But putting CapitalWare *after* the name of the conference instead of before it will help - I'm not entirely sure that the verb matters. |

Fair cop - pity that "...an inspiration of..." doesn't have the same ring. _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |
