Hello, experts

Developers in my company are asking me to add AdoptNewMCA=ALL to every existing QMGR and all future QMGRs. I think there could be a reason for not being default. Then I looked up the InfoCenter and technotes, and surprisingly they're all talking about usage and benefits of the param, none talked about any shortage.

So is it good practice to use AdoptNewMCA=ALL everywhere? Isn't there any risk/shortcoming/warning to use the param?

Thanks in advance.

Ask yourself why the developers are asking for this change.
Are they expereincing some problem that needs this?
It might be nice to share those reasons here.

Adopting this change without a good reason (developer lazyness is not a good one) should be rejected.

How do you know that making this change won't break existing applications?

Every time you reinvent the wheel the more square it gets (anon). If in doubt think and investigate before you ask silly questions.

IBM generally don't change defaults when they add new features.

However this option makes a lot of sense and I have used for all my new QMs.

The reason is like this:

We had a chl pair: SDR on zos and RCVR on AIX, which from time to time breaks down. The RCVR side would have the false RUNNING status, and SDR would have trouble starting it.

Then they found this technote, which said they should use AdoptNewMCA=ALL

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21080140

I used this before, and am not objective to the idea if there's indeed uncertainties in network, like for geographically distant qmgrs. But I think they should investigate into the network and zOS to know why the SDR failed on zOS in the first place.

Later they got an IBM specilialist for zOS, who said the param is supposed to be set on zOS, and showed me another technote, whose title I forgot, and is basically about when you find channel in use error you should use AdoptNewMCA=ALL. I was like... okay, I know little about zos, and I don't mind to set according to an IBM expert...

However weeks after that, developers raised this question, why don't we set this for all qmgrs just to be sure there won't be similar issues even between aix machines? I'm getting somewhat puzzled... is the param really a musthave? if not why do'nt any doc give some side effect?

I set AdoptNewMCA to ALL on all my QMs, along with AdoptNewMCACheck to ALL as well, which helps insure only legitimate partners are asking for adoption.

Review the MD0C Support Pack "Keeping Channels Up and Running." Study this document. Review what it has to say about the Adopt* parameters.

I suppose the reason its not set by default to ALL is this warning in the InfoCenter:
Quote:
Attention!: The AdoptNewMCA attribute might behave in an unpredictable fashion with FASTPATH channels. Exercise great caution when enabling the AdoptNewMCA attribute for FASTPATH channels.

http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv7/v7r5/topic/com.ibm.mq.con.doc/q018980_.htm

But if you're not using FastPath channels, go for it, start using ALL.

Peter,

The way I read that documentation the warning is only if you specify AdoptNewMCA=FASTPATH. If you choose ALL, it applies to all the channels except FASTPATH. At the top, it says this does not apply to z/OS.

So picking ALL does seem safe and the best option, imho.
