Hi,
I've just passed the 296 MQ Design exam. It was much harder than the 294 Administrative exam. Almost all questions required careful reading and thinking. Sometimes I had to try to guess what the author had had in midn.
In 294 I needed just one hour to answer all 71 questions and revise them, here 90 minutes for 62 questions were barely enough.
I didn't prepare for this exam - the 294 which I passed in the same session was more important to me. I just wanted to try
The onlu preparation I did was to pass 3 times the pre-assesment test (just to get free vouchers
I've had mainly administrative experience, but on several occasions I advised anylists and programmers. That was a big help. 296 doesn't ask about specific commands, it asks about concepts. _________________ Marcin Grabinski <>< |

I think the free voucher program is over. At least, I didn't see it on the web-site the last time that I looked. There are currently 3 old MQ certifications:
095: IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries
096: IBM Certified Solutions Expert - MQSeries
097: IBM Certified Developer - MQSeries
There are 2 new ones:
294: IBM Certified Systems Administrator - WMQ V5.3
296: IBM Certified Solutions Designer - WMQ V5.3
294 compares to 095. 296 compares to 096. I would guess that there is another test coming out to upgrade the 097. As far as what to study, there are resources listed on the certification site:
http://www-1.ibm.com/certify/index.shtml
You can search by test number. |

The free program is no longer there. I have told a few people about the free vouchers and they are making phone cal1s saying that they haven't received the free vouchers yet. I gave them Ron's e-mail address. |

I just checked out:
http://www-1.ibm.com/certify/news/20030409b.shtml
which is a link from the 294 test. It indicates that the first 100 people that take and pass the sample will get the free voucher. This probably explains why other people (greater than 100) aren't getting the vouchers. |

Hi Keka,
You asked how to prepare to the 296 exam. As I wrote earlier, I didn't prepare specifically for this exam. I was preparing for the 294 exam and passed 296 'by the way'. I consider the 296 exam to be pretty difficult, although I passed it with a safe margin (I had 77% and 62% were required to pass).
I've been an MQ administrator for over 3 years. I've worked mainly with OS/390 (and later z/OS) but I had also some experince with Win and Unixes (AIX, Solaris, HP-UX). What realy helped me to pass the 296 exam, was the fact that many times I helped our analyts to figure out the best MQ configuration for a given project. I also tought MQ stuff to my collaegues. They sometimes had very complex questions. Answering such questions improved my own understanding of MQSeries
So it is not easy to give a clear answer to your question. I cannot simply say "read those manuals, visit that link etc." What realy counts is your experience, not manuals. My prefered way of learning is "first do, then read". Of course, one can argue with such 'methodology', but I found it most suitable for me.
The 294 exam is easier for that matter. Here I can advise you to read "Intercommunication", "Security" and "MQSC Commands" (and "Quick Beginnings" for each platform), but again, what is more important is your experience. _________________ Marcin Grabinski <>< |

Can someone help...
I barely passed the practice exam for 296. I get totally confused when it comes to pub/sub and SAP. Anyway, here is a question on the exam. Did I get it right?? I answered C, D and E
In a Publish/Subscribe environment, which of the following are TRUE?
A. A separate queue must be specified for each subscriber and each topic.
B. A publication will always be lost if there are no subscribers to it at the time of publication.
C. The last publication on a topic can be retained to be passed to new subscribers as they sign up.
D. Subscribers to the same topics can share a queue.
E. A subscriber can choose to receive subscriptions in a non-shared queue.
F. All subscribers not online at the time of publication will miss the message. _________________ Regards,

I keep seeing requests for actual questions in the appends. I thought that one of the things that you (implicitly) signed when taking the test was a statement that you wouldn't pass around the questions.
As far as the actual sample question above:
In a Publish/Subscribe environment, which of the following are TRUE?
A. A separate queue must be specified for each subscriber and each topic.
FALSE - subscribers can share queues
B. A publication will always be lost if there are no subscribers to it at the time of publication.
FALSE - retained publications support this
C. The last publication on a topic can be retained to be passed to new subscribers as they sign up.
TRUE - this is retained publications
D. Subscribers to the same topics can share a queue.
TRUE - queues can be shared
E. A subscriber can choose to receive subscriptions in a non-shared queue.
TRUE - subscribers pick between shared queue and non-shared queue
F. All subscribers not online at the time of publication will miss the message.
FALSE - durable subscribers keep publications that show up while they are away |
