Apart from checking that the execution groups are running and the flows are not disabled, what other forms of monitoring do folks recommend for Message Broker?
Do you rely on just monitoring the hosting queue manager, or do you actively monitor the broker?

You really want to monitor the broker using some commercial package like Tivoli (mq + qi) or QPasa or any other product supporting flow monitoring and statistics.

I should have made it clear in my initial post that the customer has a preferred supplier for monitoring software, and have purchased a corporate license from them. The software provided by this vendor currently does not have a component that monitors WMB, but does have an MQ monitoring component.
The vendor has hinted that they may be able to do something for monitoring Message Broker , but would like to know what is wanted.
So, back to the original question  .
What should we be monitoring, and to a lesser extent how?

you will need to monitor:
average and spot times for:
message in queue
message in flow (from entry point to exit point)
flow is running/flow is stopped
enqueue/dequeue rates/time to full/empty
number of additional flow instances running
If you do request / reply you might want to consider it as a subflow and be able to monitor not just the overall flow time but as well the request/reply subflow time.
Of course you need some repository for history etc...

Don't forget that MQ is not the only way into and out of Broker.
Don't forget User Exits.

It looks like most of what fjb-saper listed is available from Broker Message Flow statistics messages. Would that be a fair characterisation?
I've read conflicting statements about whether these statistics are gathered for different types of flow, some say the flow must start with an MQInput node, others that it can also start with HTTPInput and indeed other types. Could someone clarify for me please?

Basically, if a vendor told me that they did not knew what would be monitored at all, I will have no reason to believe their monitoring product all though they might deliver some as someone request.
I don't bet on my business. |

Hi Guys,
Does anybody have any idea regarding where the JIDA_Path has to be configured to message broker while configuring the OPNET monitoring tool.
I tried to configure mqsistartmsqflow script file with JIDA_Path, I had seen the data metrics for the first time once I had restarted the data metrics in the monitoring tool disappeared.
Can anybody help me out in fixing this.

one thing we can view through the IE Explorer>broker name > statistics > startflow. We can view all statistics information here in Graphical mode it really awesome. But My can concern is some needs to monitor all the time for the stats right ?
Is is their any alert do we can step ? or any shell scripts to monitor the status?
can you please help me to how exactly to configure this Message Broker.

Don't double post. Dont open six year old posts. You have been told how to enable OPNET monitoring of WMB via JMX. If this concept is beyond your understanding, then you need to hire a consultant.
