Hi,

I am looking for feedback concerning the best approach to applying fix packs to a Websphere Application Server (WAS) that has an internal MQ resource adapter (MQ RA), a MQ Client, and a MQ server.

Background:
We have WAS running a JMS application that connects to a queue manager, and also parts of the JMS application is run in batch mode on a separate server that utilizes a MQ Client to connect to the queue manager. The JMS application code is built with the MQ library files from the MQ RA in the WAS install.

The current versions in use are:
WAS 8.5.0.1 (MQ RA @ MQ 7.1.0.1)
MQ Client 7.1.0.1
MQ Server 7.1.0.2

We plan to apply the WAS fix pack (8.5.0.2) which has a MQ RA of 7.1.0.2, and then also upgrade the MQ Client to 7.1.0.2. Now that MQ server 7.1.0.3 fix pack is out, we will apply that as well to the MQ server.

Questions:
I know ideally it is desired to have all the MQ components at the same level. But, due to the inherent install of MQ RA in WAS 8.5.x, it will dictate the version of MQ for WAS and the MQ Client. So, what is the best approach when WAS with an MQ RA is used?

In general, is it best to keep applying fixes to the MQ server as they come out? Then apply the fixes to WAS, and the MQ Client so that the WAS MQ RA and MQ Client are at the same fix level, but not necessarily at the same level as the MQ server - but never at a higher fix level than the MQ server?

Thanks for your feedback and time.

You are correct that WAS will dictate the WMQ Client level and you should stick with what you are doing.

It is fine to have the WMQ Clients and Server at different levels so long as they are at supported levels. It is OK to have the WMQ Client at a higher level than the server. Just keep in mind that all features may not be available to the client.

Always use a valid WMQ Client install (either in WAS or as an actual WMQ Client install). Never copy and redistribute the JAR files. Don't even move them from the installation directories.
