I'm looking at the tar file for installing WMB 8.0.0.1 on Linux. This is the file we downloaded from Passport Advanatge. I compare it to the tar file for the 8.0.0.2 Fix Pack and notice the 8.0.0.2 tar file is bigger than the base 8.0.0.1 file.
In the past for WMB 6.1 we would install each new Fix Pack into its own directory, for example /opt/ibm/mqsi/6108, then /opt/ibm/mqsi/6109, etc.
And playing with the mqsiprofile file determined what version we ran with.
Is a WMB Fix Pack the ENTIRE product?
If yes, can we skip the 8.0.0.1 install and only install the 8.0.0.2 into /opt/ibm/mqsi/8002 and have a fully functionaly install?
Or do we install 8.0.0.1 into /opt/ibm/mqsi/8001, and then install the 8.0.0.2 Fix Pack into /opt/ibm/mqsi/8002 and create/start the broker with mqsiprofile aimed at /opt/ibm/mqsi/8002? _________________ Peter Potkay

AFAIK, the 8.0.0.2 tgz file is the complete broker kit LESS a few important files.
i.e. the license files.
If you don't want to have both versions, you could install one on top of the other.
I found it easier to move the .1 install directory off onto another drive and link it back to the /opt root.
Then I install the .2 kit.
The idea is that you could have an 8.0.0.1 broker running on the same server as an 8.0.0.2 one.
The simplest way to resolve this is to create a new account for the .2 version and in its .bashrc source the .2 version of the mqsiprofile. _________________ WMQ User since 1999

Because this initial install and Broker build will be at 8002, we are never planning to rollback to 8001.
So I'm thinking install 8001 into /opt/ibm/mqsi/8002.
Then immediately apply the 8002 Fix Pack into that same /opt/ibm/mqsi/8002.
Then build the broker.
When it comes time to apply FP 8003, because we'll want to be able to fall back to 8002, we'll install 8003 into /opt/ibm/mqsi/8003.

Peter, since your above post was a week ago, You must be done with the install. How'd you make out? I'm not sure why you wanted to do that vs following the FP2 instructions and then delete the /opt/ibm/mqsi/8001 directory immediately after, unless you didn't have enough space in your filesystem for two installs. It would seem that your way might be a bit riskier if anything went awry during the install. But it does save you the work of changing the pointer to the mqsiprofile... |

The install went OK.
Basic mqsi* commands work, but we fully tested because haven't created a Broker yet because we haven't created a QM yet because we are STILL waiting for our storage to be attached to the server where our MQ logs will live.
It did save the time of having to delete the 8001 dir, not that it was a big deal.
It just seemed silly to install 8001 into one dir, 8002 into another dir, and them immediately blow away the 8001 dir.
Years ago, in the 6.1.0.2 / 6.1.0.3 days this is the way we always did it, just kept overlaying into the same location every fixpack, sweating bullets because there was no way to back out other than uninstall and reinstall. Then one day we spotted a post from jeff suggesting installing each fixpack into a new location and tweaking mqsiprofile to aim at what version you want.
I think IBM does a weak job of explaining how and why you would want to do this, and because you can do this, what exactly is missing from a Fix Pack that keeps it from being considered its own full self contained install, especially since its bigger than than base install. _________________ Peter Potkay
