Hi -

I am pretty new to message broker administration. I would like to apply the 8.0.0.1 fix pack to our existing 8.0.0.0 install. We have this installed here:

/opt/ibm/mqsi/8.0.0.0

What is the appropriate way to apply the 8.0.0.1 fixpack so that it upgrades the existing installation? During the install, should I change the default directory for 8.0.0.1 to this: /opt/ibm/mqsi/8.0.0.0 or let it install to: /opt/ibm/mqsi/8.0.0.1 ?

You can do either, by applying the fixpack in place, or installing the 8001 base version alongside 8000.

The benefit of having two base versions is the ease of migration up and down so backout is easy and migration can be selective by broker (change the mqsiprofile reference).

Don't forget to amend the ODBC ini file if you use a new path.

to be clear, there's a difference between installing the fixpack and applying it.

The only way that the fixpack gets applied is through running mqsistart from within a shell that has the 8.0.0.1 mqsiprofile applied. That causes the broker to pick up the new features.

So you can either install on top or install next to - if you install on top you'll have to stop your broker first!

And then you apply it by using the right mqsiprofile when you mqsistart.

Here's a question. Can you install a WMB fixpack into a new location without first installing the base product there?

8001 is available both as a base and as a fixpack so it's not really an issue.

But when I tried to install FP 7004 to a new location - the installer didn't work. I had to install the base version 7001 first.

@zpat - I dont think you can. When you try and install the 8001 FP without having the base 8000 installed the installer complains that it cant find licence files.

Aside from that, in looking at just the MB8001 runtime download for x86 64bit on PassportAdvantage, it is 714MB. The FP8001 for same is 589MB. So the fixpack is not a complete replacement. When you think about it, it only makes sense for IBM to do that, otherwise anyone could download and use a product for free by just grabbing a fixpack off the support site; The only restriction there is that you had registered with a valid email address.
