Is there any way to tranfer a workitem to a role instead of a specific person?

I can have the workitem transferred to a virtual user and have all the people in the role workitem authorization for that virtual user, but am wondering if there is a direct solution.

What about direct generation of WorkItem records in WF DB table?
Just copy existing work item with different user ID...
You can do it also for list of users. Some additional option in WEB Client: distribution of WorkItem...

But I never tried it.

Transfer can only be to/from a person to whom you are authorized
