Can anybody say what is the highest value for the maxChannel and maxactiveChannel attributs in the qm.ini file and what this parameters actually do?

Another question is if the Server Connection Channels refer to the same parameters and how many instances can be started at one time?

The enviroment:
MQSeries 5.2 CSD05
Sun Solaris 8

Further more I would like to know where I can get more detailed information about the qm.ini file. The Administration Guide is not deep enough in its explanation.

There might not be any limits on how high maxchannels can be set but there are limits to the number of channels that can be supported by a single runmqlsr process, if that is what you are using. We have found this to be somewhere between 300 & 400 channels (on MQ5.2 for AIX).

The maxchannels apply at qmgr level so, as Rob said, all the channels will count towards this level. Make sure you allow room for a few SYSTEM.ADMIN.SVRCONN channels for anyone connecting via MQExplorer too.

I don't know if there is a published limit. As stated before, the runmqlsr process will only support so many channels before the process dies unexpectedly. In this case, set up the amqcrsta listener process as an inetd service. There are examples of this in the intercommunication guide. I use this with up to 1800 connections on our QA machine, and it works fine. I have max channels set to 2500.
