I have been asked by a project team whether it is possible to take a complete server backup and then restore to another server with the same hostname so that MQ will continue to work as on the old server.
This is Solaris 8 server using MQ V5.3 (yes I know I've advised them to upgrade)
My gut feeling is that MQ will not work on the new server and that they will have to re-install MQ on the new server.
There is also the question of licensing that they seemed completely unaware of !
Thoughts ? |

If they take a complete server back up, file system level backup and the server is an exact clone of the original down to the kernel settings & user SIDs then it should work.
If they just back up /var/mqm and /opt/mqm (or is it /usr/mqm on Solaris? Friday. Been a while. One of them.) and just dump it down then no, it's not going to work.
It's certainly cleaner / better / nicer to reinstall WMQ & move the objects with saveqmgr. It's also an ideal opertunity to start fresh with WMQv7.

Otherwise to do that, you'll need another CR and get it approved by Management (killing of time and efforts again). Yes, you should be having the licensed one.

Correct. It will be an invalid installation because the Solaris package manager will not be aware of it. It will not be possible to apply FixPack maintenance. There are symlinks which need to be in /usr and so on.

Even if they dump the entire file system and settings? Seriously, I didn't realise that on Solaris.
Certainly I endorse that just moving /var/mqm & /usr/mqm won't work as I said above. And I'd personally do a clean install anyway.
