HI
At the place I work, SAP-PI applications are configured to use JMS to communicate to remote MQserver Queues. Its an AIX system running other MQ client applications as well using local full mq-client install

Currently we have following installed on SAP-PI client machine:
1) Installed full MQclient jms jars @ location: /usr/mqm/java/lib
2) PI imported copies of same MQ-jars into its repository located here:/usr/sap/X3Q/DVEBMGS10/j2ee/cluster/bin/ext/com.sap.aii.adapter.lib/lib

Problem now is that I have requested SAP Basis team to remove MQ-jars from its lib location & add /usr/mqm/java/lib to the Unix service-id's .profile CLASSPATH env variable. The advantage of this is to eliminate redundant client install on same machine, have a single location to manage & gain all benefits of full client install etc etc

The feed back I (an MQ admin..) got from Basis-admin as per some sapnote is that the path is not configurable inside PI & its mandatory that they import the exact list of MQ-jars as they specify

My question to you guys -> Is that how it really should be - Anybody here in the same boat (SAP MQ JMS related stuff) as Im ?
I ran out ot bullets to defend. I really need some ammunition guys Appreciate in advance- Thanks !

I suspect that the SAP folks want to have one copy that doesn't get managed (updated) outside their control, a copy that has been tested, and that they know works, and that complies with the vendor specifications.

I agree that eliminating redundant software is generally a good thing. Is this the most important battle for you to wage?

[edit]
Here is my management thought balloon: Is eliminating redundant software mission-critical? Is ongoing SAP mission-critical?

Here is a bit of Zen that might help: "When the wind is strong, bend with it; when the wind is great, bow to it."

hahahaha Not the most important.. but quite a bit
Come on.. the mq-team went through the pain of installing MQ client-> approvals, FileSystems, unix access, configure etc
Now Basis dont even want to treat MQ as a pre-requisite InfraStructure application instead an application with handful of jars to import..
That hurts my (a supposedly MQ-admin) ego ! Ok Im just kidding.. & I "bow" !! (The SAP PI wind already took off MessageBroker implementations- its blowing very heavy here )

But seriously I would like to know the pitfalls of importing jars instead of using full local client (or) more importantly the advantages of latter.. What are IBM's recommendations/best practices in such scenario?
You made a good point regarding SAP's willingness to have control on whats gets installed. I agree.. But isnt the same valid for DB-clients also?
As far as I have seen.. DBAs always mandate DB-client install to be able to support any issues..

Has anybody here configured a similar implementation for SAP JMS?i.e to use a full client install locally. I hear its not possible, looking for validation

If jars are deployed inside SAP app's lib, the MQ-admin wouldnt even have permission to that directory. In the case of client errors, I suspect on client machine they are not logged under /var/mqm/errors
A couple jms error screenshots & errors on MQserver side (if any)..

Yes, feelers do get hurt in this kind of work.

In an ideal world, all software would get along. We don't live in that world.

Best-practice doesn't necessarily apply when the vendor requires a specific installation configuration.

While I haven't configured SAP JMS stuff, I've configured other software (in seemingly odd ways) when it was required as part of the contract and service-level agreement. Did it pose problems later? Of course, but that was later.

My .05 USD: find another battle. You will lose this one.

You have my validation as a thoughtful sysadmin.
