Hi, recently upgraded to MQ7, new servers, new version of MQ.
We use MQ to exchange messages with a Customer. We have a problem with MQ Channels not starting automatically.

Each night, our customer takes down their MQ, we leave ours up.

Each morning, we expect MQ to restart the channel between us and our Customer automatically, it appears that it is not doing this as each morning the channel is down and we have to manually restart it.

We believe that in theory, the channel from Customer to us is started by our Requester channel and this requests a connection to the customer Server channel, although the customer Server should also be able to
attempt a connection to us whenever it has data placed onto it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Our technical team have always regarded channel starting as 'flakey', is there anything you can think of that might cause this? is our understanding correct? Our guys do suggest a script to open the channels, but essentially we'd like to understand should this be working as we understand and if so why isnt it?

Any ideas/advice gratefully received, apologies, I'm an ex developer and now a PM so I may have some of the terminology wrong

but this will not happen automatically. If you have requester - server channels there is no retry on the requester when the connection fails. so if the customer shuts down, your requester becomes inactive. it will try to connect to the server channel if you start it, or become active again when the server channel is started.

MQ will not start the requester channel for you in the morning. You need a script / job / crontab / ... (whatever your environment is) to start it up.

maybe you had something like that in the old environment and it was not adapted to the new environment (you said you migrated to new mq, to new servers). that could explain the different behaviour you see at the moment.

Thanks very much Butcher, will get the guys to have a look. They have a script ready but looks like we may have made a wrong assumption about the way it works.

Maybe you should change that Server channel into a Sender channel.

MQ Channels are some of the most resilient things out there, if they are set up properly.

The MD0C Support Pack is a doc titled "WebSphere MQ - Keeping Channels Up and Running"

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=171&uid=swg24006699&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&lang=en

Ready this doc. Study it. Read it again. It will make your life easier and let you sleep the whole night thru.

Is the channel going into STOPPED status? Check the long retry parameters.
