I need to move our MQ 6.0.2.6 server environment from an old Solaris 8 server to a new Solaris 10 server (whole root zone). Any easy ideas - I can't seem to find much info on this.

My thoughts - could I tar up the Solaris 8 directories, do a base install on the new box, and untar it over top? Or use savegmgr and do a "restore" on the new box?

I welcome any thoughts, ideas, or tried-and-true procedures.

Many thanks,
Varget

Far and away the best method.

As Solaris 10 uses zones, and Solaris 8 doesn't, I would hazard a guess (and it is a guess mind you) that the answer is no. Your second option is what I would do.

If the Solaris 10 server has WMQ installed in a Global Root zone, doing an untar would probably be no more dangerous than on a standard box, i.e. very, very likely to go horribly wrong!

In any other zone configuration than I agree, it becomes almost suicidal.

In both situations you need to contrast the risks with the risk of using saveqmgr, a process best described as "like falling off a log".

Vitor and Exerk, thanks for your replies.

Its going on a Solaris 10 whole-root-zone, so the zone uses an independent copy of the os, unlike a sparse-root-zone that shares/inherits the global zone's os.

Yeah, the tar-ball idea was wishful thinking, but I wasn't sure about the saveqmgr idea. I figured there had to be some way to duplicate/re-create the queue manager, rather than having to manually re-create all of the qm's, queues, channels, etc.

I'll start working on the saveqmgr solution, but I welcome anyone's additional comments or ideas.

Thanks again!

... you can do things to back up /var/mqm/ directories. There are documents in the Info Center on this.

It's called saveqmgr.

Though I agree you'll need to recreate the queue managers by hand, but there are (or should be) a relatively small number on a given server; certainly a tiny percentage of the number of objects saveqmgr will rebuild for you. If not, a pinch of script works wonders.

Don't forget to unload the authorities via saveqmgr as well.
