I have a Cobol copybook on my Toolkit/Win machine from a program that runs on iSeries. I'm using the File-Import-New Message Definition From-Cobol Copybook Wizard. The last page of the Wizard gives you the opportunity to set all kinds of information, ie, Big Endian/Little Endian, ASCII, EBCDIC, source machine, etc.

My net question is what are these settings used for? Is this information stored in my Message Set definition or Message Definition? Do I care about these settings or can I ignore them as I don't specify this kind of information when I manually create a Msg Set and Msg Definition?

My concern is that my Toolkit runs on Windows which is a ASCII, Little Endian machine. The data represented by the Copybook is on an iSeries which is a EBCDIC, Big Endian machine.

But on which machine will the message set be used?

The data will come from an iSeries machine and go to AIX via MQ.

To me the bigger question, is where and how is the information used in the Toolkit from the last page of the Wizard?

It's coded into the Message Set, so must describe the data as it's to be input or output. Hence my question about where it'll be used (which will inform your choice)
