Hi There,
I have spent some time going through the web looking at some of the tools out there however I did not quite see any that would suit our needs and was wondering if of you may be able to suggest some..
To give you an idea of our environment, its is a large scale network consisting of 5 development teirs that have about 4-5 development legs within them, so roughly about 25ish unique environments.
Within each environment we have anywhere between 5 to 30 unique QM's and 1000's of queues of all flavors.
The only difference between the environments is that each QMhas a unique name, all the queue 'network' (names and alias etc) themselves are the same across all environments (This is for a Quality Control/promotion process etc) so the one set of scripts can go up through the levels.
We are looking for a tool that would allow us to keep/track of all these queue definitions. A database if you will.
There are a few things we would need it to do for a start;
-We would need it basically to be find a queue check its definitions and change them (painlessly).
-Be able to create scripts for the queues on 1 QM of an environment and then also be able to create the queue scripts for the whole environment.
There are a few other things we are looking for, but I think you are starting get my drift on what we are after. So, short on making the app ourselves, just wondering if anyone has come across anything that could remotely do something like this.

Hello Jim,
I am sure MQArchitect will pleasantly surprise you with it's capabilities.
On the webpage, the UserGuide with functionality is freely downloadable and a free trial is available too.
Let me know if you have any other specific questions. _________________ Michael

Hi Michael,
We did have a quick look at it today, admittedly, it was just a glance. The brief look we did have at it, 'sorta' gave the impression that we would use visio to design the 'flow' and then hit a button and that would output the script for just that 'flow'? - which is really cool mind you - as we do have to do a similar thing as is as a part of the interface design.. So it did get our interest there.
How would you go with a large scale network with literally with 10'000 of queues between 30+ QM's but? Would you put them all in the one diagram? I would imagine if you did, it would get very very cluttered very quickly, or does it have some type GUI where you would be able to see them all at a quick glance? What I mean here is can I just go to it and see quite quickly that (or with a quick search);
ALIAS.SOMETHING > LOCAL.SOMETHING and its on QM45 and then be able to look into the variables of the local queue pretty quickly? |

it doesn't just generate a script, it generates a 'deployment' file in XML format that can be used for both documentation as deployment purposes.
The deployment works in 'give me what I told you' mode and does required defines or alters as needed. So there is no need to 'check' an environment first.
Surely it's always wise to see what you are deploying, but I mean there is no need in advance to see if some objects are there or not, which would be needed with scripts.
Also during the deploy any changed values are stored for roll-back of any change...

Some customers have indeed 1 big diagram fitting the complete wall in their office... others have per project files which don't interfere with each other, but tactics work.
Currently I am working on a new set of icons based on vector graphics in Visio rather then gifs, which make the icons even more interactive (so you can hover over them with your mouse and the name will pop-up) and more sharp (so you can make them much smaller or use much moor zooming in drawings)

You mention having around 25ish unique environments, this is the part where MQArchitect would truly shine for your environment, you can 'templatise' a drawing and use environment specific variables in the drawing to create or maintain several seperate environments from 1 single drawing. _________________ Michael

Hi Michael
Thanks for the reply, I will have another look over it early next week with a few more team mates when they return from leave and collate any more questions we may have about the product and ask you about them if thats ok?
Out of curiosity, how flexiable is your 14-day trial? Given the size of the network(s) we may possibly require a little longer to test out all the functions and see if it suits our needs. Granted, we can discuss more in private about this, but just a quick heads up if there is flexability in that?
Also, would anyone else out there know of any other products that may serve this purpose also? |

Jim,
the 14 day trial is very flexible, the next version will have a 30 day trial and even then I can extend the trial on request. _________________ Michael
