Let's say I have configured a very large LOG, 100 GB.

Is there any tool to measure the part of it that is in real use ?

I would like to have it running for a week, and if it reaches 50 GB then I would be happy, but not if it stays in the 100 MB occupation ...

Thanks. Sebastian.

Why would only part of a log file being in use make you unhappy?

Let's postulate a scenario where you've allocated a circular log with a maximum size of 100Gb. By some means you determine that only 100Mb is active at any one time and the rest of the space is idle.

So what? The cost of the "wasted" disc is pennies (or cents if you prefer).

To formalise my question - what problem does a largely inactive disc cause you that outweighs the warm, fuzzy feeling you get from knowing your transactions won't be backed out through lack of space?

Yes, Vitor, I like that feeling, ...

But sometimes the AIX people,
where you always go to ask to INCREASE a filesystem,
may request you "is there any way you could free some disk space",
and I want to make them happy also ...

To make them a favour also makes me feel good ...

Cheers !

The correct reply is "is there any way you could mount more disk"

To repeat the thread running through all your posts, log space is a trade off. The cost of more disc space against the cost of increasing the log if you run out. If whoever's deciding all this wants to gamble that a smaller log with less contengency is unlikely to run out, and enable space to be used for other purposes, then that's a management decision and theirs to make.

I'll just point out it's unlikely these people will get called at 1am when the log fills, nor will it be their fault it fills at the time of failure.

Why? They probably want to make you miserable

I find sleeping through the night, and coming in of a morning to discover everything's worked, makes me feel very good.
