Hi, does anyone know where I can find some documentation on the apparent message scavenger that exists for MQ 6.0 distributed Qmgrs ?

All I can find informaiton on z/os message expiration only which makes me think the scavenger is a bit of a myth for dist. qmgrs at v6.0.

No, it's real at v6. But AFAIK it's only mentioned in the "what's new" someplace, and can't be controlled or configured.

I'll accept corrections on any of the above.

I don't believe it's documented, per se.

It's not a myth, though.

Look at your QM Error log when the QM starts up. You will see the Scavenger starting up. Alas there is no public doc on it. You should not rely on its behaviour. All you can rely on is that you will never be returned an expired message.

But if the q is active, i.e. open by any app for any reason its eligible to be scanned by the Scavenger. It seems to do it every 4 minutes or so in my tests.

Thanks for the information. I have been reliably informed by an IBMer that the scavenger is not documented but it runs on a Q that is loaded (open by an app) and 2 checkpoints have passed since the last time it run.

The only thing that is missing is the message in the QM error log when it starts up that suggest the scavenger is running. I do get messages from the same process (amqzmuc0) for LOGGER-IO and CHECKPOINT tatsks but nothing for the scavenger.
