Best bet would be in fact to create a new qmgr on a different box with the right name and everything.
Then copy the created files to the right box. update mqs.ini and check it out.
At that point you can delete the qmgr on the creation box...

Finally I did a copy (cpio/gz) from a working machine.
'amqzmgr0' started
'runmqlsr' started
When trying to start 'amqzxma0' it complains about log files permissions in /var/mqm/qmgrs/<mgrname>/log .... and I cannot control that since I'm not root there.
Because all this involves root privileges I'll give up moving the directory structure between the two machines.
I'll try to find another method to create the directory structure in /var/mqm/qmgrs

Knows somebody what is the meaning of parameters for 'amqicdir' ?
I want to remove the content of /var/mqm and recreate it using this command.

Hi everybody,
just to keep you up to date with my MQ adventure.... 
I've stopped MQ on the machine, removed the content of /var/mqm.
recreated /var/mqm structure by hand with right permissions.
the problem is still there .... nothing happened... so I'm still digging |

/opt/mqm/bin/amqicdir -i - f is what is used by the installation scripts to create the /var/mqm/directory structure. If /var/mqm already exists it will check and correct ownership and permissions

Because of the function that cause the crash (zutEnsureQMDirs) I think is complaining about some folder existing/permissions that's why I tried to rebuild somehow the /var/mqm. Unfortunatelly on Solaris 10 this 'amqicdir' does nothing - at least in my case. The bad part is that things are the same even in the case of manually recreating the /var/mqm structure.
This being said I think of something linked to OS itself now rather than MQ.
But IBM MQ could have been much more polite than "unexpected error" .... 
If somebody has coded that condition it means that is somehow expected, no  ?

Folks !
Installing the latest patch cluster from sun.com solved the issue (however they brake other things ).
MQ tools work now as expected.
