I have been getting several requests at my org. to install MQ 6 series and before agreeing to take this on I have a few questions. And I should state up front I have zero experience with MQ series.

Currently the system if it were installed would interface about 10 different systems, several of them MainFrame applications and a few web applications.
Solaris 10 would be the operating system (Whole root zone)

My main question, is could anyone estimate or elaborate on the breadth and time that might be spent administering such an install?

What might be involved in day to day administration?
Are there different types of administrators for MQ (system, messaging, etc) Or are all of those generally one person?

Is the administration of such a system heavily front loaded during install or does it tend to stay fairly steady throughout the systems life cycle?

Again I apologize for the breadth of the question, but I just have absolutely no basis for an estimate on the requirements for such a system.

Thank you in advance for any help you might provide.

Batch

All the below is my personal view, other opinions are equally valid.

It depends entirely on the complexity of the system involved. For instance, there's a difference in effort in defining a system using hub & spoke architecture & one using clustering. Also do you mean MQ as in the base product or are you planning to install the broker component? There's additional effort there (or not, if you're not installing it obviously!). There simply isn't a single answer to such a question.

Checking channels & queue depths. Most sites deligate this to the monitoring software that looks after the rest of the software

See also above. The administration function is generally adopted by the machine administrators (or sys progs for mainframe). Typically 2 people with detailed training to provide cover & the rest able to deal with average problems.

Or if there's a lot of multi-platform MQ development ongoing, a dedicated team able to champion the product & negociate between Unix admins and mainframe sys progs. Again, it depends entirely on how you want to do it.

Front loaded. Once you've got it set up it tends to run itself. Managing change as part of project development is the biggest draw on administrator time, notably playing "where's my message" with developers and convincing designers that guaranteed delivery removes the need for confirmation messages all over the place.

There are of course some projects with zero impact on a well designed system; they just use it and move forwards.

I'll forgive you if you forgive me the broadness of my answer. There are many, many ways you can skin this cat. It's also possible to skin a dog instead.

Until you've got some firmer requirements you're going to struggle to tie this down.

<shameless plug>If you've zero experience with MQ a few days consultancy from someone who has may be a wise investment, at least to scope what you're trying to do</shameless plug>
