We're experiencing a time of ever expanding environment needs and I wondered how many other people had. The contractors I've worked with and their experience suggests that most people manage with less than we have.

At the moment we have:

- developers own machines (for basic development)
- a development environment (for preliminary testing of the functions)
- a system test environment
- a user acceptance environment
- a pre production environment (for operational testing of procedure, performance testing and the like)
- a live environment
- a pre live project training environment
- a post live business as user training environment
- a post live support environment

I saw in the IBM redbook on managing production environments that got to three or four here : http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247283.pdf

As you can probably imagine environment provision isn't cheap. Especially since each of the environments needs its backend apps too.

Thanks,

Graham

Time to write up the cost of each of these environments, and a corresponding loss caused by the risks entailed if you don't have them.

That is, write up the worst thing that can happen if you don't have all of these environments, and how much it would cost if that thing happened. Then compare that to the cost of building and maintaining all these environments.
