Thanks for the interesting discussion. Our backup is historically, we have it since it was always there. I understand your points and I ask my collegues to review together our backup procedure again. I agree that we could simplify it. Means restoring the configuration and no data.
But stopping the queue manager needs to work anyway!
Last night it worked without any problems we cleaned with /opt/mqm/bin/amqiclen -x after killing the hanging jobs the day before. We also added to our script this gets called always after endmqm -i.
I am not really sure if this is possible but we assume that there was some abandoned semaphore which could have caused the hanging problem. There where some FDC saying AMQ6150: WebSphere MQ semaphore is busy created during the hanging endmqm.
