I poked around and did not see that this has ever been discussed....?

A colleague of mine recently stated that he uses port 1415 for his MQ listener because "1414 gets hacked a lot". I do not agree with this, for several reasons.

1. IBM has registered ports 1414, 1881 and 1883 with IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) for use by MQSeries. Theoretically at least, that should make these numbers safe from port conflicts.
(The IANA link to port assignments is http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers.)

2. Port 1415 (and others in that range) are already registered to other software packages, some of which are heavy hitters.

3. I've never heard of 1414 being more susceptible to hacking than other ports, but maybe that's because I've always had the good fortune to work behind firewalls.

4. If I were to pick another port, I think I'd pick one that was high in the range and not registered to anyone.

I will, as always, be interested in your opinions and I look forward to a lively (but kind-hearted) debate. Thanks.

Shirley

I don't see how port 1414 is any more likely to be 'hacked' than any other port. The only thing I can think of is that 1414 is a well known port number and people could try and access it from another queue manager....but then what? If your queue managers are secured they will not get very far.

Is it any worse than port 80 etc? I think not. Every TCPIP port number is just as susceptible to hacking...or at least sniffing.

Just my 2 cents.
