You can get this information but it would not be easy.
Given that you know the Workitem and Instance names, you can query to get the workitems by that name and check to see the one in the running state and then the owner would be the user running the workitem. _________________ John McDonald

Why do u say workItem.owner() does not return the USERID who has checked out that workItem?
I believe when u query for the workItem using the USER who has authorizations to see the tasks of the USER who has checked out the WorkItem, query will return u workItem and when u do workItem.owner()
that will return u the USER who has checked out that workItem....
