Let's say that some site is not satisfied with HA solution that they implemented for their MQ infrastructure, and they are considering moving to one of the following options (the order of mentioning does not reflect their preferences):
1. multi instanced qmgrs on AIX (currently single instance "regular" qmgrs on AIX are used)
2. HA RDQMs (on Linux, obviously)
3. PowerHA for AIX (formerly HACMP )
What would you recommend out of these? I am interested in success stories, in terms of robustness of the final setup, smoothness of its implementation, basically any issues that you may have encountered during implementation and afterwards. |

What HA solution is currently implemented for the MQ infrastructure?
What aspects of it are they not satisfied? _________________ Glenn |

I would not dwell too much on their current setup, because it is not a real HA solution, does not offer failover transparent to clients, for example. It revolves around using redundant pairs of single instanced qmgrs, qmgr cluster, and such things.
Plus, recounting precisely their failure story of not using any of previously mentioned options is hopefully not in any connection with someone’s sharing of their success story of using those.
Unless you think that their current setup, as scarcely described as I described it, has a potential to become a real HA solution, after some tweaking. They still would not be interested in it. |

This can actually be a very simple, cheap and effective HA solution. The consumer app runs on 2 or more clustered qmgrs. (ie. all except one qmgr can be unavailable, and the app will still function). Incoming messages need to originate from one or more other clustered qmgrs where the consumer app isn't running. _________________ Glenn |

Add to it the benefits of the Uniform Cluster and the app can redistribute its connections as needed.
Existing caveats: this is more of a load balancing as an HA. If you need true HA you have to determine which of the previously mentioned HA solutions you want to apply to your clustered qmgrs.
Remember your HA solution is only worth what your underlying storage availability is worth. _________________ MQ & Broker admin |
