A month ago I did start a graduate role to be trained as an IBM MQ specialist. They gave me a month to get the IBM MQ Administrator v9.1 certification while I was given additional smaller tasks to work on. They know that I do not have any experience with messaging and I was a fresh CompScinse graduate. After 5 weeks I have tried the exam, but I failed and I get fired. My question is: Is it a valid expectation ? After a month prep. without any prior experience should be enough to get the certification? It would make any sense to get certified after a month of usage? Personally, I do not think so!

I had been working with MQ for just over 5 years before I attempted the Certified Administrator and Certified Solution Designer exams, having worked on Wintel, Unix, and Mainframe MQ. It took me that long to absorb enough experience before I felt I knew enough to be confident to pass, and it was my day job. That was back in 2006/7, when MQ was a much less complex beast than it is now.
In my opinion your previous employer had unreasonable expectations, and you have probably dodged a bullet. It's unlikely they gave you any training if you were there only five weeks, so ask yourself the question - would you really want to work for an employer that uses a complex exam as a benchmark, but provides no training or experience bandwidth to achieve it?

Thanx exerk, for your reply.
Speaking to other guys being involved in MQ everybody saying more or less the same. I was very disappointed when get fired, but seeing your's and others' path to get certified I am now rather happy that I left that unhealthy environment.

A good employer would have been straightforward with you and said something like ‘we are not happy with your performance here, please find other employment’ rather than creating an environment where you will most likely fail. Keep this in mind for later in your career when you become the employer.

Too many places have I been where management seemed to be of the "I shall do unto others what was done unto me", and not in a positive way!

I was in this position when I used to sit at the other side of the table and never occurred to me to play such a game.
My suspicion is that this is their "security exit" strategy, just to be a bit MQ!  |

Did you try any practice exams? If you don't understand the correct answer to any of the questions, you are not ready.
Certifications are meant to be evidence of strong skills and experience in the area. I would recommend at least 6-12 months practical experience before attempting an exam.
