I tried setting up web console for MQ. i see that it needs to be running on each server where the qmgr is running on. We have qmgrs running on a hardware cluster of 4 servers. In this scenario does the qmgr have be resgistered on all 4 servers?
we have a commercial product for MQ monitoring that offers the following
1. web based ui to look at queues and administration tasks
2. montior mq env by setting alert thresholds.
will IBM web console be a good fit for this?
Also ours is a large MQ env with tons of message flowing through. Would like to hear from people on their experience with web console in large env |

A good fit for what, exactly? What are your requirements?
You say that you have a commercial product for monitoring MQ. In what ways does it NOT meet your requirements?

I think the scalability and practicality of the MQ console in current versions is not really production ready for large sites.
Stick to MQ explorer or MO71 for now is my PoV.
I am sure IBM will address the real world scale issues in due course, not least because they will need to if they are to support the IBM managed MQ in the cloud service.
I can't see us installing web servers everywhere just to use a functionally inferior tool like MQ console. So the solution really needs to be zero footprint after basic product installation.

I don't believe that the MQ Console can monitor MQ. It may be able to set the thresholds that you mention, but I don't believe it can catch the alerts raised when the environment hits the threshold.
As others have said, if you already have a tool that does the above for you, the Web Console is not in a position to replace that tool as things currently stand.

| Has this since changed? Any thoughts? Since the last post IBM console can now monitor remote queue managers and dont need to be on every server. Can this be a good replacement for a monitoring tool now? |

No, unless you have a very loose definition of ‘monitoring.’
MQ Console is similar to the MQExplorer, in that it presents ‘current-state’ view of one or more qmgr instances. Before these tools, sysadmins had to issue a series of MQSC commands to gather the same state information the tools now do effortlessly. You or I will need to manually monitor the MQ Console or MQExplorer to determine the health of the environment, and then determine if some action is needed, AND then take that action.
A true monitoring tool allows for some level of automation to both observe, measure against tunable metrics, AND take action.

I hope IBM keep MQ explorer fully functional with new releases (e.g. new queue attributes) for many years to come.
As I really don't see the web console as anywhere near ready for the big time (and also it seems lacking in critical z/os support such as for QSGs).
Even the "mature" MQ explorer struggles with really large estates of QMs (partially due to the weaknesses of using Java). For example connecting MQE to a QM with many thousands of queues tends to hang or abend.
MO71 does a better job in that respect.

Agree. We have a large MQ estate across AIX, Linux, Windows and don't use MQE at all. MO71 is our go-to tool. The license fee is worth it.
