My question is on a architectural stand point when do we use informatica and when do we use IIB. I know IIB could do what Informatica can do. But whats the right path to take |

Informatica is a company, not a product. Which product are you asking about? Please supply more information about the decision that you are trying to make. |

Sorry about that, when i mentioned informatica i meant powercenter. It could be datastage or a similar ETL tool. So bascially when can i use one vs the other |

IBM IIB is a real-time data transformation and routing product, not ETL.
DataStage (another IBM product) is ETL.
What integration architecture problem are you trying to solve? _________________ Glenn |

I am just trying to understand what to use when. I know IIB can read from a DB, transform the data and write. What i'm trying to understand is if you are given both these products when would i use one or the other |

If you think your requirement can be achieved thru ETL tool, then you should go with ETL.
IIB got so much to offer and not meant to be an ETL |

Where are you moving the data?
From a DB into another DB or file? use ETL...
From a DB or large file into a set of messages on one or more transports (HTTP, MQ, TCPIP, SOAP, MQTT, etc. etc. etc.) ? Use IIB. But make sure you deal with the large file or a DB one record at a time in your IIB flow. _________________ chmod -R ugo-wx / |

The right way to go is the one that meets your technical and business requirements.
I'm not sure what you mean by "experiences" ? Are you asking for specific information about solutions that were built, and issues that were run into?
That's rather a lot of information to give here.
You've received a fair amount of advice on how to choose one type of engine (ETL/Powercetner) over another (Broker/IIB).
The remaining work is understanding your business and technical requirements, and matching those against the capabilites of the products you have available to use.
Again, if you are going to use IIB to process large amounts of data, you should do it one record at a time, rather than as one giant block of data.. _________________ chmod -R ugo-wx / |

FWIW we distinguish by the amount of transformation and/or routing involved. If it's a straight "lift and shift" to or from a database with a single end point then the pattern says to use ETL. If the requirement is more complex, with transformation / reformatting of the data and some decision as to target, then the pattern says to use IIB.
But as others have said, what you choose to do is very much dependent on your individual circumstances. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
