V8.0.3 of MO71 is in Open Beta.
As mentioned in an earlier post, one of the items in this version allows you to set a naming convention for your queue manager.
Another item currently in progress is the use of IBM MQ's Trace Message feature to trace the route of your message through the network. The resultant reports issued by IBM MQ are used by MO71 to generate a diagram of the route. Here is an example diagram to give you an idea.
Using trace message can be useful for a number of reasons.
- Show whether a queue resolution is happening correctly
- Show what path(s) a message may travel through the MQ network
- Show the percentage split of messages to multiple destinations in, for example, an MQ cluster
- Given an indication of the response time sending to various locations in the MQ network
- Given an indication of the current cost of a Channel link
This version of MO71, Version 8.0.3, is now available as an open Beta at http://www.mqgem.com/beta_downloads/mo71_8.0.3_Beta.zip. The feature is still a little rough around the edges and there are a few changes I still want to make. However I would be interested to hear your thoughts and opinions. As with all Betas the usual caveats apply, take backups of your data etc.
Licensed users of MO71 can run the program on their current licence. If you don’t have a licence then by all means send an email to support@mqgem.com and one will be sent to you.
I look forward to your feedback,
Cheers,
Paul. _________________ Paul Clarke

FYI - I have used the Activity Trace to track message routing (nothing as sophisticated or nice as this tool), and ran into an issue that is addressed with this APAR - http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg1IT01569
Basically, there is an issue with converting MQBYTE data (like MsgId, CorrelId, etc) in the Activity Trace which causes the field to get shifted by a few bytes and you lose some of the data. Therefore, you can't correctly tie the message by MsgId, CorrelId, etc. _________________ Working with MQ since 2010.

Well that's interesting....thanks for the warning. It would be interesting if you ran the tool in the environment where you know the problem happens and see whether you have any issues.
Cheers,
Paul. _________________ Paul Clarke

To help clarify things for me (and to make this thread more understandable), does this new Trace Message feature in MO71 use the Application Activity Trace or the Trace-route messaging feature of MQ to accomplish this task? I think your original post said:

but now says:

My original post was done, thinking that you were using the Application Activity Trace to track the message flow and users might experience the bug I mentioned with MQBYTE conversions and the AAT. _________________ Working with MQ since 2010. |

Sorry for the confusion. I modified the append to try and alleviate that confusion. It doesn't use Activity Trace...it uses Activity Reports (but even that sounds too similar). So, I changed it to Trace Message to try and make it clear.
Basically it uses the ability of MQ to send a trace message through the Network and have reports sent back at key points. ie. when a channel picks up the message, when a channel receives it from the network and when a channel puts (or rather discards) it to a local queue.
Any clearer?
Cheers,
