A while back IBM had stated that they were "thinking" about creating a unix based configmgr due to the number of requests from users. I have not heard anything since.

Has anyone heard any information about IBM creating a unix based ConfigMgr install?

Kevin,

Last time I talked to our IBM rep, they had no plans on moving this from Win 2K other than getting it XP certified. As I mentioned to you when we met, I'd always run the Config Mgr on it's own box with no brokers on it. I would think others would concur with that. I keep my all databases on a seperate UNIX server just for UDB (and managed by my database group) also. Things have worked out very well this way.

Hi Paul,

Why? If you have a robust unix environment what difference would it make where the Config Mgr is running?

>> DB2 UDB

We have to run UDB on the unix box since we use it for our transactions. Having a remote install of UDB would add overhead to every transaction.

It's nice that you have a DBA group to administer this for you. I'm my own DBA for WMQI. Also, you probably have a good Windows support group as well.

For me, running everything on Unix would greatly simplify administration.

Kevin,

My comment of running the Config Mgr on it's own box was simply due to the very limitation in question here. Yes, I'd run it on UNIX also if IBM had given me the chance. Licensing is based upon the size of the broker box(s). We centralize (i.e. Hub approach) and have one production MQSI box now, will add another this coming year for failover. We also moved these onto seperate, smaller UNIX boxes to save on licensing. Watch the Capacity Unit price breaks and this might make sense for you also. We try and avoid NT as much as possible in most situations, so that's why I moved all that I could off that platform, including databases. I know there is a bit of a performance hit not having the MQSICMDB and MQSIMRDB on that same Win 2K box as the Config Mgr, I'm not convinced it's that much and I'd rather keep the MQSIBKDB in the highly available UNIX environment anyway. Some network tuning might also help that. Have fun...
