hi

a question on installing MQ on Solaris .
According to Creating File System on Unix, it says the working data directory cannot be changed.
Right now I have a current system with limited /var space. Is there any way to workaround this without much hassle ? Would creating a symbolic link to another file system path help? for eg, i can link /var/mqm to /myotherapplications file system. ?

i don't understand why this working directory cannot be changed.

thanks

Yet here it says the -ld & -md parameters can be used to place a queue manager's files in separate areas; go figure.

Indeed even in the link you post, it explictly says that the 4 critical directories under /var/mqm should be mounted on different file systems to ensure stability.

I don't understand why you'd want to when all you want to do is use different file systems. I don't understand why you're considering a symlink when the documentation recommends mounting the different file systems you want to use. I don't understand why you wouldn't, by default, specifically place queue manager data stores in secure locations when they are created via the crtmqm command.

One specific use case: you have 2 critical and heavily used queue managers. You would want all of their I/O through separate disc controllers to improve throughput and prevent contention, and would need to place log & queue files accordingly.

ok thanks. then that solves my concern on limited /var space.

what i actually meant was why can't the installation prompt me for another file system for /var, like the one for /opt , which i can choose to install on other directories instead of default.

On many Solaris systems of my experience (including the one I'm currently blessed with), putting "user" data anywhere other than /var have the Solaris sysadmins forming lynch mobs. It was a long and interesting discussion having the queue manager data elsewhere and I still think they're plotting to have be deported.

I know that isuggesting the installing of WMQv7.5 other than in /opt in Linux got us a formal memo of protest from the Linux admins to senior management. Perhaps if they club together, I can be deported first class.

To answer your question I don't know and it's never actually been an issue for me in 2 decades of using this software. But raise an RFE, post the link and you can count on my vote.

Best I hoover the dungeon and clean up all the cobwebs - chains to be oiled or do you want them to remain clanky?

Clanky. And remember to clear the thong panties out the dungeon before I get back this time.

If you're going wear that sort of thing, do it in your own room.

It's extraordinary if you can get through LHR with all the luggage you started with

The first. Though I will of course be disguised as my mild mannered, real life alter ego.

It is usually Frankfurt, Delhi and CDG (paris) that lose my bags.

I'll give Ohio a wave as I fly over it tomorrow en-route to Denver.

They're not mine and I have absolutely no idea how they got there...
