Hi, we need to apply fix packs to a number of our enterprise level, production QMs. I am being now being challenged on establishing a restore point at which I can quickly and safely recover the MQ binaries and data at a point in time before the patch was applied (e.g. on stopping the QM), should teh aplication of the fix pack fail for whatever reason. Is there IBM best practices I should be following given system criticality?

Thanks,
Pauline

Yes - take a file system backup of the critical components before patching. In the event of a problem, restore.

Plan B:

Run a SAVEQMGR (MS03) and save both the Qmgr object definitions and security and save a copy of the qm.ini (or Windows equivalent).

Plan C:

TAR or Zip the Qmgr data and log directories. Make sure you have the base MQ install media and the current fix pack that is applied (always a good idea).

Plan D on Unixes: 1st commit current fixpack level.
Apply fixpack level in uncommitted state so you can roll back...

The latest versions of MQ allow you to have multiple installations on the same server, even at the same version.

Another option is to install another installation of MQ on your server with the latest fix pack, and restart the Queue Manager referencing the new installation. Any problem restart the Queue Manager referencing the old installation.

Yeah, I suppose one could screw things up so bad that in the process of just installing the second install you clobber the first.
Yeah, I suppose the QM could become completely hosed attempting to run on the new version so that when you try and fail back to the old version its pooched anyway.

No matter which way you go, the best way is to add extra time at the start of the change window to quiesce the system and take a solid system level backup. And then do Option C mentioned above in case the backup is junk. And have Option B from earlier in the day in case you're really having a bad day and your suspenders snapped right after your belt broke.

For some of us, suspenders mean the things used to hold up Women's Stockings. We would use the term 'Braces', but it is a nice thought for a Friday evening. Time for some OTT methinks.

Every time you reinvent the wheel the more square it gets (anon). If in doubt think and investigate before you ask silly questions.

Here in the US, 'braces' are applied to children's teeth to straighten them.
