Anyone know of a case study doc or something of that nature that explains the benefit of integrating SAP using message broker. Advantages of going through a middleware layer? i understand the benefit of a decoupled architecture but trying to find out more information on the benefits.

Decoupling other applications from their interaction with the SAP system.
They might not understand how to "speak" IDOCs or BAPIS, but the BUS does.
