We need to migrate from MQ version 5.3 to version 7.1 our OS/400.

What is the correct way to do it ?

1) un-install 5.3 and install 7.1 on an empty AS/400 ?
2) can 7.1 be instaled on the same machine without removing 5.3 ?
3) install a patch to go from 5.3 to 6.0 and then a patch to go from 6.0 to 7 ?

The Info Centres contain the relevant information on what and how to upgrade through the various versions. From what I can see, there is no direct upgrade path from V5.3 to V7.1. Additionally, there is no supported upgrade path from V5.3 to V7.0 either although there is an 'alternative' method described HERE. The answer to your question of what is the correct way is answered by both the information contained in the Info Centres and your site standards.
