So far, I have yet to come across an institution that manages SSL certificates in a well managed and automated way.
Mostly, I see folks get either CA certificates or Personal certificates and put them in one key store or another manually. Worse, they keep track of when the certificates expire with a spreadsheet (at best). Often, we find out a certificate has expired because something has stopped working.
I have yet to find software that will track all certificates, who they are issued to and when they will expire. It would be good to know what is in the (DN of) certificate...
What are the best practices for managing SSL certificates? |

A colleague of mine have developed a certificate management tool, which contains an expiration alert function as well.
But there are numerous certificate lifecycle management tools on the market, some of them is available as a free / open source software, e.g. Dogtag: http://www.networkworld.com/community/blog/using-dogtag-ca-ise-12 |
