I've been fiddling around this morning on a couple of play-pen systems, and not being a major user of MQExplorer I've only just noticed a difference in the Message n - Properties window between versions when using it to browse messages, specifically the list of properties on the left pane of the window:
Quote: |
SYSTEM1: Linux OS, WebSphere MQ Explorer Version 7.0 (WebSphere MQ Version 7.0.1.5)
General
Report
Context
Identifiers
Segmentation
Dead-letter Header
Data |
Quote: |
SYSTEM2: Windows OS, WebSphere MQ Explorer Version 7.5.0.2 (WebSphere MQ Version 7.5.0.2)
General
Report
Context
Identifiers
Segmentation
Data |
Please note that the WebSphere MQ Explorer versions are as reported by 'Help | About...'. It seems that the Dead-letter Header option has been removed in the later version, which seems a retrograde step to me as it is a most useful little option. I've hunted through all the options I can find to see if there is a customisation option for that window, but if there is, I couldn't find it. Also, to be sure it wasn't something sneaky, such as appearing only if a message had a DLH, I forced a message to the DLQ and the option did not magically appear.
So, has anyone noticed this, or is it just me having a problem with installation/configuration? _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

Hi exerk , in a system I'm using now I did a small test to send a message do DLQ and when browsing it, the Dead-letter Header option is there.
When browsing a normal queue the option is not presented. My system is:
Windows OS, WebSphere MQ Explorer Version 7.0.1.9 (WebSphere MQ Version 7.0.1.9)
| dlq messages have format MQDEAD _________________ Obrigado / Thanks you |

ramires, thank you for confirming that. I have a suspicion that this may be something that happened in WMQ v7.5 so I'm trying to find a WMQ v7.1 installation to see if the option has been removed there also. _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

Update: I've managed to find a WebSphere MQ Version 7.1.0.2 installation, with WebSphere MQ Explorer Version 7.1.0.2, so from everything I've seen so far it seems to be restricted to WebSphere MQ Explorer Version 7.5. _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

I've just tried on Windows an MQ Explorer at V7.5 GA looking at a DLH message on my MVS queue manager's Dead-letter queue and the option is there, and looking at a V7.5 Windows queue manager and the option is also there.
What does the Data panel show the Format to be? Mine shows:-
Code: |
Data length: 179
Format: MQDEAD
Encoding: 546
Message data: DLH
Message data bytes: .... |
if you scroll to the right you can see the start of the DLH header (the eyecatcher) at the beginning of the message.
Is it possible that the message you are looking at does not have a DLH on the front and Format set to MQDEAD?
Cheers

Morag, the format is definitely DLH. And from what I remember of the 'old' versions of MQExplorer, the Dead-letter Header option in the left pane was there whether a message had a DLH or not. I'll try and post a screenshot.
EDIT: Added screenshot.

My V7.5 looks like exerk's. No Dead-Letter Header option. Sure I can see the DLH eyecatcher in the data panel but that's because that's the data. _________________ Never let the facts get in the way of a good theory. |

I have several versions of MQ installed on my Windows laptop, so I have tried this on the following versions of MQ Explorer.
MQ V7.0.1.6
MQ V7.1.0.0
MQ V7.5.0.0
In all cases, if the message has Format = MQDEAD then the extra panel is displayed, and if it does not, then it is not.
You say that your message definitely has the DLH on the front. Does it also have Format set to MQDEAD?
EDIT: Just seen your edit and your screenshot which answers my question.
Cheers

What happens when you apply FixPack 2 to your V7.5.0.0 installation?
I should add that my V7.5 install was V7.5.0.0 initially, then migrated through V7.5.0.1 and V7.5.0.2. As stated, I'm a rare user of MQExplorer so I can't confirm the behaviour I'm seeing at V7.5.0.2 was there/not there in V7.5.0.1. _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

Looking at your picture compared to my V7.5.0.0 version does show me that something has changed in this area between V7.5.0.0 and V7.5.0.2 which you are using. In V7.5.0.2 you have gained several new fields on the Data panel, namely:-
Total Length
Coded character set identifier
I have asked a member of our Explorer Team to take a quick look to see if anything else has changed in this function around the same time. Perhaps the criteria for showing the Dead-letter header panel was changed at the same time.
Cheers

I now have another installation on my Laptop - V7.5.0.1
Looks like V7.5.0.1 added the aforementioned extra fields, and at the same time this erroneous behaviour with the Dead-letter header panel appears to have been introduced.
This is a defect in my view.
Cheers

Should I raise it 'officially' or can I consider it as being handled via the back-door? _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

I think it better if you raised it officially assuming you want it fixed. Otherwise it might only get fixed in current development and not in a fix pack.
Cheers
