My nephew is apparently participating in some kind of Lego robotics competitions. My brother in law mentioned that he was using some software to develop the behavior of the robots, but that it wasn't exactly really programming, it was more a matter of dragging nodes around and connecting them and then setting properties.
I explained that, indeed, I was somewhat familiar with this notion and that it tended to pay my bills...
There's a lot of snark in that ./ thread, because you know ./ is full of snarky people. Somehow, though, it's "friendly"? Or something?
But the notion that visual programming is new is obviously bollocks. The notions behind visual programming - establish clear sets of predefined function that have known fixed interfaces and make it easy to string them together - is also staggeringly old.
But there is always marketing value in claiming that something is "new", even if all it does is put a different name on the blivet.
It's just as easy to make something like IIB or Node.Red or LabView or any other kind of visual programming environment excessively complicated, overbearing, overengineered and unmaintainable as it is to do for any other kind of programming environment. Using a visual metaphor does not magically make something easier to use. |

The visual drag, drop, set, connect model has been around for years.
I guess the big step forward will be when one 'node' talks to the other 'nodes' it is connected to and automagically sets up all the 'stuff' that goes between them base upon the settings inside the node.
Thankfully I think/hope/predict/whatever that something like that will be more than 58 months away and I can retire gracefully. _________________ WMQ User since 1999

Every time you reinvent the wheel the more square it gets (anon). If in doubt think and investigate before you ask silly questions. |

I think you'll find that this is an NP-Complete problem (at best) for the general case. It's similar to trying to tie a knot in the middle of a piece of string without knowing how long the piece of string is.
So, yes, I do not believe that it will be "solved" in the next 58 months. |

I saw a reference to this sort of software as doodleware.
It is great for selling to management types because the demos are quite simple and makes things look easy.
How many pieces of this type of software claim that "non-programmers" can use it?
This stuff is great for the high level layout of software but you still need to be able to "configure" (ie program) the details to make it actually implement the desired functionality. Or at least to do more than non-trivial things. |
