Hi All,

We are collecting information as how Nagios can be used to monitor MQ and MB on a server (Linux server with multi-instance MQ and MB). With monitoring, I mean usual support monitoring activities which says Channel is fine, queue is fine, qmgr is good, flows are running, etc along with disk space is good and no new entries in error log files.

From the online documentation that I have read till now, I understand that I can use either Nagios Core (Open source and free, currently we are preferring as client want something free) or Nagios XI (enhanced). I have gone through the demo of Nagios XI and some other docs on both.

Please validate my understanding-
1. There is no inbuilt monitoring mechanism within Nagios to monitor either MQ or MB component.
2. We need to write scripts and put them as plugins in Nagios module to enable monitoring.

Have a look around Roger's site
He may still have a list of monitoring software split by free and for $$$.
Remember that you get what you pay for...

Among the better known names on the market these days you have:
BMC middleware monitoring and performance (used to be qpasa), not allowed software (IR360), contact admin.
I could not possibly name them all (my memory is not that good anymore), and this is in no order of preference.

Do your own research. The hints above should get you started.

Have fun

Thanks fjb_saper. There are always too many things in 'Roger's site' to chose from

I have earlier used BMC Patrol and Tivoli. This time looking for Nagios. More googling gives me an impression that there are very limited instances when it is used to monitor IBM WMB.
However, for other users who might work on Nagios, here is the
link for Nagios support forum.

Others, please share your views.

So the usual points-of-difference between different MQ monitoring systems are
  • whether it requires an agent on the server hosting the system or not
  • whether it comes with MQ specific functionality or not

Agent vs. agentless is a topic of great endless debate, and subject to lots of rumor and disagreement. I choose not to express an opinion here, but there are solid points on both sides, so it's worth at least discussing the issue internally.

MQ specific functionality is another topic of some debate. The advantage of a product that has MQ specific functionality is that you don't have to build it or support it. The disadvantage is that there are fewer products on the market that support it, and so it's harder to be flexible in your choices. A roll-your-own set of monitoring tools can be modified slightly to fit with any reasonable monitoring infrastructure - trying to use Tivoli MQ tools in BMC is probably not gonna happen...

Again, this is an argument that it's best to have internally and openly, so that when a decision is made, everyone understands why and what the consequences and value of that decision is.

Hmm.. so Nagios is one of those which says.. give me the script/plugin and I'll monitor it for you.
