I have been researching different options for language translation on message broker (version 7), with no luck. Neither the infocenter nor this forum seemed to have anything relevent to what I am trying to do.

Before I ask my how-to, I would point out that I am also interesting in opinions on best practices. To be honest, I'm not sure I think this request (made by a client) is appropriate for the middleware system to do.

With that in mind, is it possible for the broker to do language translation of message payload without building an entire system around it? The last thing I want to get in to is to create some sort of language dictionary in a database or something. I've read java has functions that can do this, but didn't know if broker did (without importing the java packages).

Thoughts?

You mean, for example, translating "I am struggling programmer" into "Јас сум се борат програмер"?

Is that what you mean by "language translation"?

If so, Broker does not have any in-built facilities for this....

If you're just looking to swap predefined phrases, like "This is a database error" into the same thing in another language, then you can look at the message catalog functions that Broker has. But those only apply to errors and exceptions that your flow will produce.

Yes.

>>language dictionary

You mean like a message set or a message model schema file ?

>>in a database

Databases can be very useful in message translations. So can Drools engines.

Whats wrong with using off-the-shelf third-party libraries?

>>language translation

Google's translate API is Web Service callable through HTTPRequest node.

Thanks for the replies.

mqjeff -- I was thinking something where the client passes in a request and can receive a response in any language they prefer.

Client Sends - "Give me your name in French"
Server Replies - "My name is Jeff."
Broker Translates - "Je m'appelle Jeff." (My French is beyond rusty)

lancelotlinc - Not so much message dictionary, which would define a structure. More for content. I was thinking more like English to French dictionary.

Totally agree. I actually designed and implemented a database for the purpose of translation at my company. My concern was only having to add functionality to store translations in ten different languages.

I don't have anything against using third party libraries, but didn't want to use them if it was something the broker supported natively.
