License and maintenance revenue for IBM middleware products reached $7 billion in 2011. Once 2012 closes, you'll see an increase in both market share as well as total market climb an additional ten percent or so.

Don't try to do this without proper knowledge. This is not a self-taught career. Use proper resources to gain the needed knowledge.

I don't offer career advice for reasons obvious to anyone with knowledge of my career.

As vunerable to anything else to macro-economic forces. If the USA goes over the fiscal cliff, the only solid prospects will be bankurptcy lawyers. If the Eurozone melts likewise. If neither of these events happen, others will. It's how the world works.

It can be anything. 10 years is an eternity in IT; it's like investing - past performance does not indicate future profits. It's clear MQ is not going away tomorrow or anytime soon. But in 10 years IBM could invent something else. A company we've never heard of could invent something better. In 10 years message based communication could as obsolete as punch cards and we'll all be streaming data through The Cloud.

If you can predict accurately what's going to happen over the next 10 years, there are more profitable avenues than WMQ, or even IT.

If you're asking if WMQ admin is a fun career, a challenging career, a meaningful career, an exciting career, then YES. Carpentry, yes; plumbing, yes; car repair, yes.

Consulting, uh... it depends.

Often depends on how many of the other skills you're called upon to employ. My plumbing sucks.

On 'the clean side', plumbing is pretty good.

The only safe choice in IT is to demonstrate a continual ability to adapt to change.

I now tell everyone to avoid IT as a "career". But then I don't live in India.

Plumbing, carpentry, unarmed combat, forensic accounting, public speaking & the rank of Zagen.

You'll also need good programming skills, as much of your admin work will be figuring out how the application is making your topology act as it is & playing "hunt the message" when the application people claim you've "lost" it. Good OS skills on all the platforms you're administering will be a help.

Solid knowledge of SSL and security matters is a must.

Understanding basic business functions, like accounting, finance, payroll, inventory, etc., will enable you to support clients and developers.
