Is anyone using this in production?
Do you find that it is simplifying your upgrade and patching process or is it just more of an overhead when there are multiple qmgrs on a server?
Has this caused any concerns with any scripts or tooling ? |

Multi-instance and multi-version are two different and unrelated installation options.

It has pros and cons.
It allowed us to install MQ 7.5 (alongside 7.0.1) which we needed to use IIB.
However now that I come to upgrade the primary install, I have found the major caveat that the installation/uninstall process of 7.0.1 is not tolerant of any other MQ versions on the same host. So you have to stop or remove everything and then put it back afterwards.
Once you are totally clear of any version of MQ below 7.1, the multi-install becomes less painful.
In terms of scripts etc - yes, you may have to modify some to use setmqmenv commands, but again once you finally ditich 7.0.1 or below it's less of an issue.
So, in retrospect, I would suggest avoiding using secondary installs until you have removed 7.0.1 or below from your hosts forever.

We are intending to move to a multi-installation environment and this is the only thread i've found that says much about it.
Our plan is to keep our existing version of 7.0.1.12 and add a new installation of v7.5. We can't upgrade directly as we have too many Qmgrs and applications so have to go for this scenario which, from reading the docs is less than ideal.
Presumably you have not had any major issues with migrating a Qmgr from 7.0.1 to 7.5 and having apps use it (other than the minor ones you mention)?
You're saying that you only really had major issues when you wanted to get rid of your 7.0.1 installation altogether?
We were thinking of installing 7.5.0.4 and perhaps in future a later 7.5.n version but leaving the 7.0.1 install there even if no Qmgrs are running it.
Almost all our apps connect in as clients, so hopefully that minimises the chance of issues with correct libraries being used.
Other than some exits that may need recompiling, possible issues i can see are around the use of the IBM Omegamon monitoring tool and our HA software (VCS or RHCS).
Any advice or comments? |

You will need to sort out your security.
If I were in your shoes, I'd take each QMGR and do a POC test with it and as far as possible the appications/clients to sort out the security.
I'm just about to upgrade a 7.0.1.8/Broker 7.0.0.4 system to MQ 8.0.0.1/IIB 9.0.0.2.
I'm doing an upgrade of the 7.0.1.8 install to 8.0.0.1. I have a script to make the 5 or 6 changes needed to make it all work after the upgrade. This was developed by a lot of testing. I went down several dead ends before I sorted out a workable procedure. That is what you are going to have to do.
It is all very well asking for help on a forum like this but there is no substutute for actually getting your hands dirty and trying some things out.

Does your upgrade plan include the use of the mqccred(ChlExit) exit?
