Hello, I have been working in mainframe technoligies over 12 years and planning to switch my carrier to WebSphere MQ/MB. My questions is, do I need to learn Java too ? I have no background of java. I am planning to work as MQ Admin/Message Broker (eSQL). Please advice how would be job security, pay structure in India etc. Please suggest me how much time does it take for one to start working (Time taken to learn and get job, job location is India). Thanks for your help.

If you want to get into WMB, java would certainly be a big plus.
Think that the SSL setup for WMQ is based on Java... (the wizard takes advantage of all those java classes around JSSE and JCE)
Have fun _________________ MQ & Broker admin |

You don't need to learn a programming language if you're only looking to do WMB/WMQ administration.
You'll want to pick up basic unix shell scripting, however. |

Exactly what mainframe skills do you have? _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

Two hot spots in India that hire WMB people are Bangalore and Hyderabad. A company called Sampoorna is a good source for jobs, although they look for people with five years experience.
I know, how can you get experience with no experience? If your good with Java (or can get good at it), you can get on contracts with little experience needed and work with some of the guys and gals from Sampoorna who do the WMB work.
Developer jobs are ten-to-one more plentiful than WMB admin jobs. There are not really any entry level WMB jobs of either variety. A top-rated WMB developer can pull down almost a million rupees a year but most make around 600,000. Salaries have contracted in India for the last three years as there is a glut of resources available. Most people don't get raises or very little, and the only way to move up the pay scale is to change jobs.
Here in US, the pay is x7 or x8 compared to India. x22 if you work in NYC. If your goal is to make money, you should plan on traveling.
Taking some IBM classes or finding a mentor would be ideal for you. _________________ http://leanpub.com/IIB_Tips_and_Tricks

Hi All, Thanks for the reply. If I go back with my current job as People management, delivery management and project manager, I can make 1.2 million rupees. I thought, I can make more then that if I move to WMQ/WMB side. My experiance was from COBOL,JCL and DB2. I have plans to move back from US to India for good. I thought I can learn WMB/WMQ and makup of 10 years to get more then what I am getting. I know that there a risk, but reward comes with risk. My question is, how har it is to pickup WMQ/WMB. Thanks again. |

You have to be really diligent to learn WMB. IMHO, first stop is training:
IBM WebSphere Message Broker V8 Application Development I:

IBM WebSphere Message Broker V8 Application Development II:

While Java skills are not strictly required, they would help you in troubleshooting. There are alot of fine-grained detail that would get in your way: developing messages flows is alot more than just writing some code.
Much of what happens in successful message flows depends on the diligence of the developer: for example, using Trace nodes. Many new developers seem to skip that step and therefore cannot accurately troubleshoot problems. Another example: SSL configuration. You can configure at the EG level or the Broker level. Which do you choose? This type of information will cost you days of frustration because there is not any "beginners guide".
If you are in US now, don't go back to India if your goal is to develop WMB flows. In NYC, you can earn $325 per hour as a top-rated WMB developer. Of course, you only get to keep $25 per hour because the gov't takes the rest in taxes. LOL! _________________ http://leanpub.com/IIB_Tips_and_Tricks

Does your current employer have MB? If so, get involved, get hands-on experience with the product. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

English language skills are also useful...
Job security?
Welcome to the club - job security in the West is non-existent because of all the jobs that have been moved to India. It may be that China will undermine the Indian jobs. |
