Just a comment about this forum softare.

The layout is REALLY nice, user friendly, etc. I've configured and used YaBBSE, ezboard, etc and haven't found it to be as nice allthough similar. IE. PHP using MqSQL. Also like the fact that I never have any cookie problems with this forum software (I haven't checked but I assume it uses cookies).

Great job!

Yes, it uses cookies to store the session information, as well as giving us that nice link to "view posts since last visit" which is invaluable... When I first set this site up, I looked at various boards, but this one had all the features I wanted, and since v2.0, the look and feel is superior to the rest - so much so that they've all been copying it

Brandon,

Yes the look and feel is very nice, not cluttered. Only thing that I noticed is that when I reply to a message, I never get the subject field automatically populated with the Re: xxxxx

Is there an option somewhere for this? I'll check my profile just in case.

The obvious alternative BB if you like PHP and MySQL is Vbulletin

www.vbulletin.com

It's not free - but is widely used.

Yes VBulletin is nice but not free as you mentioned. FREE is always better I choose YaBBSE the MySQL version and it's not bad. A little slow for the dialup users and on occasion there are some cookie issues where users are logged out for no reason. Other than that, I was initially worried that the forum software was going to bog down the server I was hosting it on but so far no problems. Looks like most of the forum software out there are pretty cool and VERY similar. For YABBSE they had a site that allowed you to download different templates to use with it. I'm sure phpBB has the same thing.

I use Vbulletin for my BB - free is not always better - that's why MQSeries is such a great tool because there is money to invest in development of new features and support.

For a site of any size, the dedicated hosting costs will exceed the non-expiring VB license probably after about 45 days - so the VB license cost is really immaterial and I personally prefer the superb support that VB has and look forward to version 3 out soon.

For a small hobby site - it makes little difference I suppose.
