I have WMB 6.1 running with on windows server and using SQL database. I need to upgrade to WMB 7.0 on AIX. Which database would be recommended? DB2 or SQL. I would assume DB2 because it is an IBM product but not certain abt my assumptions.

"SQL Database" - can you be more precise i.e which vendor/product is that ?
Edit: Just seen the windows part of your post, presumably you mean SQL Server database ?

Regarding which DB to use with v7 then it's up to you. I don't see any particular advantage with going down the DB2 route, stick with what you've got experience in and what meets your business objectives. Perhaps you no longer need a DB on v7 if you have no business persistence need ?

Since you don't need a database to operate WMB v7, you can just access remotely hosted databases from message flows as you need to. Most types are supported but your company would probably have a preferred one.
