You can not install MQ v6 on the same machine as MQ v7.

You must stop all the queue managers, uninstall MQ v6, install MQ v7, and then start all the queue managers.

No.

You follow the instructions in the Solaris documentation for migrating from WMQv6 to WMQv7.

AFAIK even though WMQv7.1 allows coexistence with earlier versions, the non-7.1 version has to be v7.0.some fixpack level. If I'm wrong about that (and I'll leave it to you to discover that because I can't be asked) then that would be an option.

See my comment above. I don't think you can but I might be wrong.

NO.

You can not install MQ v7 on the same machine as MQ v6.0.

You can not install MQ v7.1 on the same machine as MQ v6.

You can not install any version of MQ on the same machine as MQ v6.

I repeat.

YOU CAN NOT COEXIST MQ V6.

You must uninstall MQ v6, and then install MQ v7. That is the entirety of the process of upgrading, except for starting and stopping queue managers.

This is clearly documented.

Machine == same o/s instance.

Good point. I forgot this is Solaris.

You can't coexist MQ v6 in the same zone.

You can install MQv6 in the global zone (and thus any sparse zones that use the global zone) and then install MQ v7 into a new whole root zone. Or the opposite, install MQ v7 into the global zone and MQ v6 into a whole root zone.
