I have an application design question. When designing a Workflow application using UML, where should I start? For example, I could start with a UML class diagram depicting all of my classes which would span the entire workflow process model, or I could design UML class diagrams for each activity within the workflow process model. Does anyone have any experience or opinions on an approach? I'm having trouble seeing how UML and MQ Workflow fit together with respect to OO design.

I will try to create following artifacts.
1. Class diagram for each program acting as a Workflow node.
2. Activity diagram (Workflow diagram) for each flow.
3. If you are writing or modifying a program then class diagram showing new components and their interaction with exesting component.
4. Use Case diagram showing how the Users will use the Workflow system.

Try using the LOVEM modelling from IBM.
If you are referring to just designing the UPES's for PES's
then you should almost forget about workflow and treat it
as a black box. The UPES's job is to consume mesgs and maybe respond
if need be.
