experts,
wondering what is the logic behind setting the user mqm's home directory to /var/mqm on unix platforms,rather than having it set to default /home/mqm.. will this affect the functioning of the queue managers ??

Hi RD,
couldn't find an explanation either .
Some distributions say:
"It is also suggested that you set the mqm user's home directory to /var/mqm."
So it doesn't seem to be a prereq.
In some of our systems we made a softlink mqm in /home to /var/mqm to keep it smooth.

I would not use /var/mqm.
If you log on as your ID, then switch over to the mqm ID, you probably don't want to be in /var/mqm by default because you don't want to create new files by default in Websphere MQ's directory. If you really want or need to be in /var/mqm, make a conscious effort to issue the command to switch there. Otherwise stay out of /var/mqm and outside of /opt/mqm to avoid accidentally deleting, changing or adding files inside the product's directories.

Another vote for not using /var/mqm.
/home/mqm is more useful, as the MQ admin can use this to store local shell scripts, definition scripts, tools, work files etc, without impinging on the sacred /var/mqm.
You are free to choose the mqm home directory when the userid is created. There are no dependencies in MQ.

thanks for the pointers guys...
i was wondering why it should be. and i have tried both the options of setting the user 'mqm' home directory to /home/mqm and /var/mqm but didnt find any difference regarding the functioning of the queue managers. so just wanted to check why the IBM documentation mentions it very specifically to set mqm's home directory to /var/mqm.
