Hi,
reading the IBM documentation it seems that when it comes to installing a broker CSD on AIX you get the choice of installing over the current installation or to a separate location.

This gives you the opportunity to effectively have 2 versions of the broker code installed at 2 different CSD levels and switch brokers between the two by using the profile.

Question 1: Have I read this correctly - is this possible ?

Question 2: Assuming I have, has anyone done it and give me any hints, gotchas etc. to watch out for.

BTW, we're talking broker 6.0 here.

Many thanks,
Tony.

Yes, it's possible and it works.

You shouldn't think of it as much about giving you the opportunity to switch versions at will, however.

If, for example, you deploy a flow at the 6.1.0.8 level that uses a 6.1.0.8 function, and then you restart the broker at 6.1.0.2, you might have some issues....

So think of it really as giving you an opportunity to roll-back a FixPack - and treat doing so at the same level of change management you took to apply the FP in the first place.

Yup - that's exactly the kind of thing I meant. It gives us the luxury of upgrading the code levels without the worry of it all going horribly wrong.

The idea would be to switch over brokers one by one and then delete the old level when we're happy.

As you say we have an easy way of backing out the upgrade if we hit a problem.

Presumably, the only difference is that you install to a different location - I guess this is asked for as part of the installation.

Thanks for you help - nice to know I'm not going completely mad.

Tony.

Don't forget to use -f all on the broker to get all functions enabled.

New features (as opposed to fixes) are not enabled by default when you apply maintenance. You have to issue an mqsichangebroker with the above parameter.
