Hi alll...bear with me I am new to MQ.....

What mechanism controls the amount of disk space allocated to local queues....obviously you can set a max depth, but I assume you would hit a disk space limitation before the max depth if your messages were large enough?

Thanks,

Craig

MQ does not provide any mechanisms for managing the amount of disk space that is used by MQ.

You can control the maximum size of individual messages, and the maximum number of individual messages, but that is only tangentially related to diskspace. There are other controls on other objects - transaction log files, for example - but again they are controls on the objects themselves and not controls per se on the disk space being used for htose objects.

If your queue manager experiences an issue trying to allocate disk space, it will almost certainly lead to an outage.

Plan your disk quotas accordingly.

Your question was specifically about disk space allocated to queues. From this, I suppose that you mean space allocated to specific (individual) queues. In this sense, Jeffs answer is correct.

As always, things are a bit different on mainframe (z/OS) WMQ, where space for everything (page set datasets hold queues in z/OS) is allocated in advance, with the opportunity to set finite limits on the amount of disk space - with or without the opportunity to expand if necessary.
