I am working on a data centre consolidation project that will re-host hundreds of applications from Sun SPARC 8 in the UK, to Sun SPARC 10 infrastructure in Germany.
A couple of the applications use MQ 5.3.0 for basic messaging capability, but we are having problems getting MQ 5.3.0 to work on Solaris 10, and we are struggling to move forward.
I was hoping that someone on this forum could help
Questions :
1. Is MQ 5.3.0 certified to run on Solaris 10 ? I have seen varios IBM documents that state the system requirements/pre-requists for MQ 5.3, some of them say 5.3.0 is certified on Solaris 7,8,9 and 10, with others saying its only certified on Solaris 7 and 8
2. We installed MQ 5.3.0 on our Solaris 10 server. After creating a queue manager succesfully, the following error was encountered when trying start the queue manager -
AMQ5615: Default objects cannot be created: CompCode
= 0 Reason = 0.
The suggested solution for this problem was to re-install MQM by answering 'No' to the question Do you want to install the DCE option during the installation process.
Taking the suggested solution above, we re-installed MQ 5.3.0, and re-created a queue manager. Now, the queue manager momentarily starts and exits unexpectedly with the following error message in the log file.
AMQ5009: WebSphere MQ agent process 19106 has terminated unexpectedly.
This also leaves a couple of processes running which are listed when trying to recreate the queue manager.
AMQ8041: The queue manager cannot be restarted or deleted because processes, that were previously connected, are still running.
Process 20712 is still running.
Process 20711 is still running.
AMQ7018: The queue manager operation cannot be completed.
Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening and what we can do to resolve it? E.g are we missing a fix pac; do we need to contact IBM; does 5.3.0 not work on Solaris 10 full stop and because its no longer supported we will need to upgrade to 6.1 or 7.1 ?

If MQ v5.3 works AT ALL on Solaris10, it will NOT be at the FixPack 0 level.
The only reasonable thing to try is running 5.3 FixPack 14.
If that doesn't work, you have to assume that it simply won't work on Solaris 10, FULL STOP.
And you should have told your clients FULL STOP when they said "We're using MQ v5.3". |

That's a reason to upgrade even it you do manage to get v5.3 to work on Solaris 10.
Because to get it to work you'll have had to apply significant maintenance (14 fix packs) so you'll need to do significant regression testing to ensure everything still apparently works. And at the end of it all your clients will still have an unsupported framework because v5.3 is out of support and they'll have to do the whole thing again when something else changes and they've no option but to upgrade.
I understand your clients have probably given you the line about "we've been using v5.3.0, never had any need to upgrade or maintain it as we've never had any problems". This is true, providing nothing ever changes in their environment. Now you're moving 2 major levels in OS and they can't expect that the really old WMQ they're using will still work.
They can cross their fingers and hope, which it sounds like they have done, but in all probability their luck has run out. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

And if WMQv5.3 was still under support, and you'd raised a PMR with your problems, and quoted that link as evidence, the first response you would have got would be "apply the latest maintenance & see if the problem persists".
So, in summary:

You're missing 14 of them.

It's pointless; v5.3 is out of support so the only advice you could now get is "apply the latest maintenance & see if the problem persists". _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

But they can all be applied in one shot. Applying just Fix Pack 14 includes all the fixes from 1 thru 13 as well. Vitor I know you know this just wanted to clarify to people not familiar, in case they are holding their head and wondering how they can do 14 upgrades and meet deadlines.

Perhaps their company bought extended support? Not common, but possible. _________________ Peter Potkay

Quite. But by applying that single cumulative file you're moving forwards 14 levels, with all that implies for your envirnment and applications. My comments above on regression testing are relevant here.

They didn't think applying preventative maintenance was a good idea, stayed on 5.3.0 but had the foresight to buy extended support? I agree it's possible but highly unlikely. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
